There are many unwarranted food trends out there (cough: cronuts). However; when it comes to Acai bowls (pronoucned: ah-sigh-eee) the buzz is 100% justifiable. This is because Acai bowls made from the Acai berry (a super superfood from Brazil) are filled to the brim (both literally and figuratively) with endless health benefits. Some of these include; antioxidants, omega-3s and amino acids. What’s more; these little berries pretty much outrank nearly all other superfruit on our planet; including pomegranates, blueberries and goji berries.
Today, the best Acai bowls in New Zealand are sold by Brazilians Cristina Orcy and Gustavo Pereira (founders of Pure Jungle Acai) in beautiful Mount Maunganui. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience. When I initially spotted their adorable caravan set up, I had been desperately scouting the streets for something healthy (and delicious) to eat before climbing the Mount. Disheartened and about to give in to a sugary muesli bar or the like, I was fortunate to lay eyes on the white Pure Jungle Acai caravan. When I asked Gustavo which menu item he recommended, he gave me a low-down of each product and its numerous health benefits. Gustavo explained that for Brazilians such as he and his partner, Acai has been a staple food for centuries, especially in the Amazon region: “a perfect bowl of Acai, as we have in Brazil, is a part of a happy and positive life style and we want to bring a little bit of that to New Zealand”. In other words, if you can’t make it to Brazil, Pure Jungle Acai is the next best thing.
Acai & Coconut Chia Pudding Parfait: Chia pudding made with house made coconut milk; layered between a creamy blend of PureJungle organic acai, banana & blueberries, topped with coconut flakes, almond slices and fresh rockmelon (raw, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free).
Similar to ice-cream or froyo minus the extensive sugar and unnecessary calories, my chia pudding not only satisfied my sweet tooth but also thoroughly sustained me for the remainder of my adventure-filled day. I definitely recommend these guys – undoubtedly, they know their shizzle when it comes to Brazilian berries you know, seeing as they’re Brazilian. What I’m trying to say is, just as you’d go to an authentic Italian for pizza and legitimate Japanese for sushi, Cristina and Gustavo are the go-to for Acai.
